Collaborative artwork: when multiple people work together to produce a work of art.
Real life example:
World renowned artists Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat worked together to create collaborative work.
How it might in the classroom:
Below are collaborative works created by high school students. Notice how the artwork is made up of small sections. Each student has created their own section and together the students have created one large artwork.
master's copy: when an artist/art student creates a copy of a famous work of art
Masters' copies are a common practice in the art world. The process of observing a painting and replicating it forces the learner to step into the artist's mind. It takes a lot of skill to accurately reproduce an image in the same style as the artist. In order to successfully replicate each brush stroke one must demonstrate attention to detail and the ability to move their hands in the way the artist had.

David Hockney
In the 1970s, Hockney began working in photography, creating photo collages he called joiners. He continued to create and exhibit art, and in 2011 he was voted the most influential British artist of the 20th century.
In addition to pools, Hockney painted the interiors and exteriors of California homes. In 1970, this led to the creation of his first “joiner,” an assemblage of Polaroid photos laid out in a grid. Although this medium would become one of his claims to fame, he stumbled upon it by accident.
While working on a painting of a Los Angeles living room, he took a series of photos for his own reference, and fixed them together so he could paint from the image. When he finished, however, he recognized the collage as an art form unto itself, and began to create more.

Hockney had deep admiration for Picasso and the collage "joiners" paid homage to Cubism.

our project: COLLABORATIVE MOSAIC MASTER'S COPY
Goal
To understand what methods and procedures are used to create art; to understand how artists work.
objectives:
As a class, create a collaborative master's copy.
Present a well crafted work using the collage/mosaic method.
Connect knowledge of master's copy to replicate an assigned section of a famous painting.
After the entire class has completed the master's copy and assembled it, respond with a thoughtful self evaluation.

As a class we will be creating a master's copy of a famous painting by Vincent Van Gogh. I have gridded out his painting and each student will get a section. You will use the method of collage, as artist Schimmel has done, to accurately recreate the image. Keep in mind that the goal of a master's copy is to replicate the original as closely as possible.
Notice the brush marks in the close-up of Van Gogh's Starry Night. We want to replicate the marks of the paint brush with torn paper.
