goal
Create a cubist inspired artwork that displays knowledge of the value scale and technical skills.
Objectives
*Successful use of the value scale will create a strong contrast.
*Having a consistent, steady hand when shading will result in an overall sense of harmony and unity.
- Create a Cubist inspired artwork incorporating: three contour hand drawings and intersecting lines.
- Explore ways to add a personal connection to the composition.
- Present a well crafted artwork using graphite that demonstrates a range of values and smooth transitions.
- Complete a self-evaluation based upon goal and objectives.

Directions
1. Draw a 1/2" border around your paper. If you chose the large piece of paper you may do a 1" border.
2. Draw 3 different contour line drawings of your hand, each in a different pose. Allow the drawings to intersect.
2. Draw 3 different contour line drawings of your hand, each in a different pose. Allow the drawings to intersect.
3. On top of the hand drawings you will draw a contour line drawing (just an outline) of something that is personal to you.
Some ideas:
-write your name in block/bubble letters
-draw a contour line drawing of an animal...... ex. butterfly
-draw shapes...... ex. stars
-write your favorite number
-draw a contour line drawing of an instrument......ex. guitar outline
-draw a contour line drawing of a logo
-draw a contour line drawing of fruit..... ex. apples or pears
-Be creative and think of something you like, just remember no shading yet- overlapping line drawings are all you need at this point.
4. Add a variety of lines to break up empty areas. The lines should start to be somewhat abstract and hidden to some degree.
5. In the individual spaces, using a variety of pencils (hardness form 6B- 6H) create gradations from light to dark (Value). Once you've finished one space, work on the next being careful not to put two dark side next to each other or two light sides next to each other. NO SMUDGING. Use your kneaded eraser.
*To avoid smudging your paper with your hand, use a blank piece of printer paper on top of the areas you've already shaded.

here's what to except from the different pencils:
*Remember the B's are darker and smoother. The h's are lighter and scratchier.

Hand drawn methods
6. Once you've finished the hand-drawn methods, you will scan your image into Photoshop.
Photoshop methods should not overpowers the hand-drawn image.
7. Crop your image to that it is as neat as possible- no border showing.
8. Duplicate the layer and set the top layer to multiply- this will make the image have more contrast
9. Adding Gradients- not required but will improve work that didn't fully capture the value scales
In Photoshop you can intensify some of your gradations with the gradient tool (on a very low opacity). Use the selection tool (underneath the magic wand) to select an area. If you select too much change the selection tool from + to - this will allow you to deselect areas. You may need to make the size of your selection tool smaller for small areas.
10. Colorize-required
Now you are ready to SUBTLY colorize your image to create emphasis.
-For your first of the three versions you will make your image monochromatic: hit COMMAND U, check off colorize and change hue to desired color. Save this document "LAST NAME CH1".
-Copy the original scan into a new document again. Duplicate the layer and change the top to "Multiple" just as you did before.
-Use your selection tool (Under the magic wand) and select an area. If it selects too much change the tool from + to -. This will allow you to deselect areas. You may need to make the size of your selection tool smaller for small areas.
-Once you have an area selected hit Command U
-Check off colorize
-Play with the settings, but KEEP THE SATURATION LOW- we want subtle use of color.
Make a three different versions. Only requirement: one must be monochromatic. Think about the color harmonies and what colors you feel work well together. Free free to add any other creative adjustments to your work.
