SYMMETRY: When an object is the same on both sides, or can be "cut down the middle". Radial symmetry means that the object be divided at any angle along the center axis and each side would be a mirror image.
Goal:
Utilize a variety of line and texture to create compositions displaying balance: asymmetry, symmetry, and radial symmetry.
Objectives:
- Line has both physical and emotional characteristics; Identify and utilize the characteristics to display a variety of lines.
- Utilize line to create compositions displaying balance; symmetric, asymmetric and radial symmetric.
- Use hand drawn methods in conjunction with Photoshop.
- Familiarize with computer/Photoshop skills such as scanning, colorizing, free transform tool, crop tool, duplicating and flipping an image (horizontal or vertical)
- Evaluate own work based on guidelines and identify the Elements and Principles of design within your work.

Art Core Questions:
How do artists learn from trial and error?
1. In order to create an image that comes from our imagination, we must experiment. This is also known as "trial and error".
2. We learn more from the mistakes that we make because it forces us to continue trying new ways of working that will lead to success.
3. This assignment is where you get to make those mistakes, try new combinations of lines and put them together to create new textures.

Step 1: create an Asymmetric Zentangles by hand
Zentangles are a relaxing and experimental way to create beautiful images, or inspiration for future artwork. Zentangles are structured doodles that use only line to showcase pattern and texture.
You will create multiple zentangles using different compositions and patterns. Experiment and do not become overly concerned with "mistakes".
*Use several different patterns and textures within each Zentangle.
*Create value by using a balance of dark and light lines and textures- heavy lines placed close together will appear darker, while thinner, spread out lines will appear lighter in value.
*Use line to carry the viewers eye throughout the image.

Invent patterns or use patterns created by others..
Step 2: Scan in drawing & add desired color
-Once you've completed at least two Zentangles, choose your most successful one.
-Scan into Photoshop
-Crop as desired
-Add color or adjustment layers as desired
-Flatten image

-Flatten image
-Save this version as "asymmetric zentangle" This will be one of the three documents you will turn into google classroom
STEP 3: CREATE A SYMMETRIC image
-Open your asymmetrical zentangle & copy it- COMMAND C
-Create a new document in Photoshop- COMMAND N or go to File>New
-Paste the asymmetric zentangle into the new document- COMMAND V
-Use the tutorial below and follow steps 3-7

-Use the tutorial below and follow steps 3-7
-Stop at step 7. Save this document as "symmetrical zentangle". This is the second document that you will turn into google classroom
step 3: Create a Radial Symmetric image
-Using the same tutorial take your artwork one step farther by creating a radial symmetric image.
-Follow step 8-18
-When complete name this document "radial zentangle". This is the final/3rd document that you will turn into google classroom.
*If you make multiple versions turn in your favorites, I love to see extra work & of course it will get you a higher grade if you go above and beyond!
